Today we went started the day by going to the field museum. We bought a pass to the science station in Cedar Rapids so we didn't have to pay to get into the museum itself, but we did pay to go into the Mammoths and Mastodon exhibit.
Simeon had been asking to go by Wrigley Field so we could take a picture of him there. When we were driving to the Field Museum Johann told him that Soldier Field was right next door. We took a picture of the boys by the sign and that filled the need to get a picture at Wrigley field. The 2nd picture I just love of Ammon. It wasn't very warm in Chicago (low to mid 50's) even with the bright sun shinning. When the boys stood by the wall with the Soldier Field sign, the wall was warm, so Ammon turned around and plastered himself against the warmth of the wall. Then told us we "had to come feel it!" He was right it was nice and warm.
The kids have been wanting to come here (especially Simeon) for years to see Sue-the T-rex. Right when you walk in you can see Sue at the other end of the main floor. She was huge-just her head alone was massive. Her real skull is upstairs in a glass case, but the rest of her skeleton on the main floor is hers.
In the Mammoth and Mastodon exhibit they had Luna the worlds most preserved and smallest mammoth ever found. They think she died when she feel into a watering hole and got mud into her mouth and nose. They have been able to learn so much from her being so well preserved. We also got to stand by a life sized mammoth. It was HUGE!
Ammon really liked playing with the "hundreds of corn" in the discovery area. Rebecca liked it too because she got to crawl around and explore things. It's a neat area made for kids that has some of the exhibits upstairs only on a kid's size and more hands on. Ammon made a friend as they worked together to fill the pot with all the corn. Then we played dinosaur in the giant nests. There were dinosaurs bones to dig up and lots of other fun things to do.
By the time we left we were all exhausted. We saw maybe half of the museum. It was HUGE. Each of the exhibit halls go on and on and on. Some of them to see one area you'd have to walk through different areas to get there. We were so surprised at all that was in the museum. Ammon really liked the Egypt exhibit, while Simeon couldn't stand to be in it.
After the Field Museum we headed out to Shaumburg which is where we were staying and to the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. Ammon wore his Narnia knight outfit with sword and shield and Simeon wore his helmet and carried his sword and shield. Corrine had a pretty dress to wear, but it was alittle cold to put it on. When we got to the Castle we were put into the Yellow Knights section. That meant that we wanted to cheer for him and help him to win the tournament. Before you go in, they have a knight presentation where people can pay to be knighted by the King of the Tournament.
Inside of the arena we sat near the top of the yellow section. They brought us Dragon Blood Soup (Tomato Bisque), a baby dragon (half chicken), dragon tail (rib), potato half, biscuit and apple turnover. There are NO utensils, but the ten attached to your hands!! The kids had such a blast eating the food with thier hands. They watched the tournament so intently the entire time. We bought them each a yellow flag to wave. Ammon sat on his knees starring at the tournament and waving his flag. He said he LOVED the dragon blood soup and wanted me to make it at home. Corrine and Simeon were on the end and we hardly heard from them. Rebecca was wiggly, but was happy the entire time (nearly 2 hours). She watched the horses and sword fighting and also really liked the soup.
The story of the tournament is: The Prince is taken captive by the green knights gaurds. The King is having a tournament and has invited 5 knights to come. A treaty has been reached with the green knight and he is also invited to come to the touranment. When the tournament starts, the green knight betrays them and says that he did not get the treaty and he is not going to join them but fight them. They have different games: horse showmenship, horse competitions where the riders try to get rings on their jousting poles, jousting and then sword fighting where the knights are slowly defeated. Our strong yellow Knight won his 1st jousting and sword fight, but after a tiring 2nd battle with the green knight he fell. In the end the red knight won and the prince was freed.
Back at the hotel Simeon and Johann went swimming. Simeon thought it was sneaky when he pretended to be 10 so he could go into the hot tub. No one else was in the pool area anyways, but just in case he was 10 for the night.
